Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD)

Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD)

“My goal in my role is to promote, self-advocate and assist people with disabilities,” said Yari Aponte, the APD’s division director, “to become more independent and feel part of our community.”
UFHC has a fully trained staff that will help to carry out the mission of the agency where they will provide support to persons with development disabilities to live, learn and work in their communities. Their goal is to improve the quality of life for those who cannot easily help themselves, through personal support, life skill development and companionship.
The benefits of remaining at home rather than an institution is paramount to an individual’s wellbeing,” added Olive Gaye, President & Founder. “As advancement in medicine, improved safety measures and superior nutrition allows us to live longer, UFHC considers itself very privileged to be selected for the APD program which allows individuals in our communities to remain in their home for as long as possible.”

      Activities and Recreation

      Additional services

Children and adults with disabilities, face many challenges in their daily lives. Although some may work and be relatively self-sufficient, others require more guidance, supervision, and attention. Recreational and leisure activities, particularly those that promote social ties and friendships, are essential to support the quality of life of people with these types of disabilities.
Various activities can help develop socializing, expressing feelings, and staying healthier. These activities are most successful when they are tailored to the abilities and capacities of a specific person, taking into account their person in a unique way.

      Physical activity

Exercise and physical activity can help with development and reach your potential, both physically and mentally. Swimming, dancing, exercise classes, bowling, horseback riding, and team sports are activities that can be fun and promote health.

      Music therapy

Using music to improve physical and emotional health, known as music therapy, is another useful tool for children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Activities can be as simple as clapping your hands or playing music with your feet or participating in long chants. Playing percussion instruments is another popular musical activity, where you can feel the rhythm and vibrations.

      Art therapy

Art provides a means of expressing feelings and emotions, particularly when the person is unable, or unwilling, to articulate them with others.

      Activities in the nature

The treasure hunt encourages people to find and identify things in nature: plants, insects, trees, birds, and other wild animals.
